Småkraft Tops Sustainability Ranking for the Fifth Consecutive Year

Småkraft creates value together and leads the way for the renewable energy industry Småkraft now has 235 small hydropower plants across Norway and Sweden, generating renewable energy in harmony with nature and local communities. In Norway, the company collaborates with over 1100 local landowners who own the rivers. Småkraft’s collaboration model provided landowners with direct payments of over NOK 40 million in 2023. Total direct payments to Norwegian municipalities were over NOK 1.7 billion. Hydropower is the form of energy production with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions over the entire lifecycle of the power plant, compared to most other forms of power production. In recent years, Småkraft has intensified its efforts to reduce environmental impact and protect biodiversity, with measures for protecting fish and restoring nature after construction. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for investors. Many companies worldwide are setting goals for net-zero emissions by 2050, but sustainability encompasses much more than greenhouse gas emissions. New sustainability reporting requirements will make it easier for investors and stakeholders to compare and monitor companies’ efforts in climate, environmental, and social matters. Småkraft AS has participated in GRESB’s ranking since 2017, consistently outperforming the industry average since 2018. Despite increasing demands and a higher general level among companies, Småkraft has topped the list of hydropower producers since 2020. This year’s score was 97 out of 100, with 60 out of 60 points for “sustainability performance.”
