The power plant utilizes the 95-meter drop of the Øygardselva river. The river is located in Bjørkedalen, approximately 13 km from the municipal center in Volda. Along with high annual precipitation, the river also receives inflow from the mountain areas west and south of Bjørkedalsvatnet.
From the intake, the operating water will be transported in a 450 meter long inlet pipe. The pipe route will follow a forest road in its upper part, further into a forest area up to the infield.
Bjørkedalen is known for its cultural heritage sites associated with the river. Boatbuilding has played a central role and has been of great importance to the village for a long time. Below Øygardsfossen, the river flows through an agricultural landscape where there are still intact cultural monuments from sawmills and mills. It has been important to take these into account. The power station is therefore planned above Øygardsfossen.
